1958 Heart-Lung Machine

This heart-lung machine - a device originally designed and built by John Heysham Gibbon and Mary Hopkinson between the '930s and the '950s - dates back to 1958 and can be seen in a showcase of The Science and Art of Medicine gallery - a part of The Science Museum in London (Exhibition Road). This model was designed by D.G.Melrose and used in the first open heart operations at the Royal Postgraduate Hospital, Hammersmith.1.
