Aletta Jacobs' monument

The commemorative plaque dedicated to Aletta Jacobs was erected in 1923 by the Association of Women Citizens to celebrate the deep bond between the famous doctor and the place where she lived and worked. Located at number 15 Tesselschadestraat, in Amsterdam, it bears witness to Jacobs' presence and activity in that house during the years of her intense medical and social work in the Dutch capital. The inscription, translated from the original Dutch, reads: “In this house has lived and worked Doctor Aletta H Jacobs. She was the first woman who obtained the doctor title at a Dutch university and made a path for those who came after her. Women of future generations owe her a great deal of gratitude”. The decision to place the plaque while Jacobs was still alive represented an extraordinarily early recognition of her contribution to medicine, gender equality and women's emancipation.
