Aletta Jacobs' statue
This monument celebrates Aletta Jacobs, who obtained her doctorate in medicine from the University of Groningen in 1878, which is why the statue stands in front of the university building at Oude Kijk in 't Jatstraat 26. Created in 1988 by sculptor Theresia van der Pant, the monument depicts the famous pioneer in a bronze statue approximately 2.27 metres high, resting on a 1.5-metre base.
The statue, the only one in the city dedicated to a female figure, represents the determination, intelligence and civic commitment that characterised Jacobs in her tireless work for women's emancipation and rights, making her a central figure in the history of equality and education in the Netherlands.
