Bullfighters' memorial to Alexander Fleming

This unusual monument to the memory of Sir Alexander Fleming "outside the municipal bullring in Madrid provides a handsome tribute to him; its unveiling on 14 May 1964, by the mayor of Madrid and Sir George Labouchere, the British Ambassador, was reported the following day in The Times. The bronze bust of Fleming stands on a marble pedestal; before it is a full-lenght bronze statue of a matador saluting Sir Alexander with his montera (the hat worn in the arena). An inscription reads: 'To Dr Fleming with the gratitude of bullfighters'; their lives were in less danger because of his discovery [penicillin]"1. The monument is a work by Spanish sculptor Emilio Laiz Campos.
