Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza

The hospital "Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza" (Home of the Relief of the Suffering) was built in San Giovanni Rotondo (Viale Cappuccini, 2), on the 9th May 1956. It was built with the help of pilgrims, S. Pio's spiritual children, "doctors and professors from medical universities all over Italy such as dr.Guglielmo Sanguinetti and prof. Valdoni"1. On 26th July 1954 the first part of the future hospital, the "Poliambulatorio" was inaugurated. Another structure, "Casa Padre Pio, Residenza per Anziani" (Home Padre Pio, residence for elderly people) was built near the hospital in 1991. In addition, pediatry, genetics and research labs were detached from the hospital to a new "Poliambulatorio" opened in 2002. It bears the name of Pope "John Paul II" who visited "Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza" on 23rd May 1987. "The hospital has held many scientific meetings. It has been visited by important Italian politicians , prelates and cardinals"2. It has reached so far (2010) 1078 beds for in-patients, 56525 day hospital in-patients, 21 operating rooms
