Eduard Arning

This page lists items in the database related to German physician and dermatologist Eduard Arning (born 9 June 1855 in Manchester, England; died 20 August 1936 in Hamburg, Germany):

Eduard Arning grew up in Hamburg and later studied medicine in Strasbourg and Heidelberg. As a young physician, he trained in dermatology in Berlin, developing a keen interest in infectious diseases. From 1884 to 1886 he carried out research into leprosy in the Hawaiian Islands, specifically at the leper colony on Molokai. Some areas of his work, which included inoculating a condemned prisoner with leprosy, are now considered contrary to medical ethical standards. Arning’s scientific accomplishments and photographic documentation from his sojourn nonetheless broadened medical insight into this transmissible illness. From 1906 to 1924 Arning was physician-in-chief of Dermatology and Venereology at St. Georg Hospital in Hamburg and in 1919 he became associate professor at the University of Hamburg. His legacy as a researcher, teacher and medical practitioner holds a lasting place in the history of medicine.
