High on the wall of Rock House, Exmouth Place, Hastings, England, is a white memorial tablet to Elizabeth Blackwell who lived in this house for thirty years from 1879 until her death in 19101.
The tablet bears the following english inscription: "HERE LIVED AND WORKED FOR THIRTY YEARS / DR ELIZABETH BLACKWELL, / BORN AT BRISTOL 1821, DIED AT HASTINGS 1910. / THE FIRST WOMAN TO GRADUATE IN MEDICINE / IN THE UNITED STATES, AT GENEVA, / (SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY) NEW YORK 1849. / THE FIRST WOMAN TO BE PLACED ON THE / BRITISH MEDICAL REGISTER 1859. / "ONE WHO NEVER TURNED HER BACK BUT MARCHED BREAST FORWORD / NEVER DOUBTED CLOUDS WOULD BREAK, / NEVER DREAMED, THOUGH RIGHT WERE WORSTED, WRONG WOULD TRIUMPH / HELD WE FALL TO RISE, ARE BUFFLED TO FIGHT BETTER, SLEEP TO WAKE". Final sentence is taken - with gender inversion HIM / HER - from the Epilogue of Asolando, Robert Browning's last book2.
