Fernand Widal's monument

This Art Deco monument to the memory of Fernand Widal can be seen within the precincts of the Cochin Teaching Hospital in Paris (27, rue du Faubourg Saint-Jacques), where Widal "devoted his whole life to clinical teaching and research (…). Although Widal greatly admired Claude Bernard and Louis Pasteur, and was a personal friend of Emile Roux, he did not join their laboratories, preferring to remain at the Cochin Hospital and to adapt it to the new standards of medical care. (…) Widal attracted hundreds of students, who later moved to key university positions. His lessons at the bedside, unfortunately not preserved, reflected how Pastorian science revitalized the Paris School of clinical medicine"1.
