Francesco Lastaria, a well-known surgeon, died in the 27th of September in 1948 in Lucera. He was buried in the "Cimitero Comunale" (via della Pace) of his hometown. His gravestone -even if very damaged- is still visible in Hipogeum 102 where his body was moved in 1951, near to his sister's Giovanna body.
After Lastaria's death, one of his friends, the poet Enrico Venditti, dictated a moving epigraph that can be seen on his gravestone. The painful loss of a friend is commemorated as follows: " NELL'ORA ESTREMA / PREMIO DEL BENE CHE ALL'UMANITA' DOLORANTE /
PRODIGO' L'AMMIRATA SUA SAPIENZA DI CHIRURGO / RITROVO' / PER BENIGNO DONO DIVINO / LA FEDE DEI PADRI SMARRITA E PUR SEMPRE ANELATA / ATTINSE COSI' LE STELLE / NELLE NOTTI DI STUDIO E DI SOGNI / PIAMENTE VAGHEGGIATE".1
