Giovanni Presta's birthplace

Giovanni Presta was born in this house, placed in the old city center of Gallipoli in the street Giovanni Presta, on June 24th 1720 and he died in the same house on August seventy-seven years later. He was only child of Lazzaro Presta and Caterina Gaggiulla, he was educated by Don Nicola Pirelli and Don Quintino Mastroleo. He moved to Naples to study medicine, mathematics and astronomy. In 1741, after medicine degree, his father wanted him to return back home to practise his profession and so he became the most important doctor in Salento. He was declared “doctor of the city” in 1742, doctor and surgeon of poor people in 1757.
