Biography
Born in Potsdam, in 1917. In 1951, he moved to West Berlin, leading the Institute for the History of Medicine and working as an X-ray physician in Sweden. Returning to Berlin, Goerke became chief physician and a professor at Freie Universität. In 1973, he initiated the German Museum of Medical History in Ingolstadt, where we can see a bust depicting him made by Kathe Krakow. He was appointed to Ludwig-Maximilians-University in 1968 and led the Institute of History of Medicine until 1986. Goerke published extensively and received numerous honors, including the Bavarian Order of Merit and the Great Cross of Merit. He passed away in Munich in 2014, and a street in Großhadern was named in his honor in 2019.
