Johann Georg Wirsung's cenotaph

This cenotaph of Johann Georg Wirsung can be seen in the Chiostro del Capitolo (cloister of the Chapter) of the Basilica of St Anthony in Padua. Wirsung was murdered on August 22, 1643, in front of his house, and the day after was buried in the cloister1. His earthy grave has long disappeared, but the marble cenotaph on a wall of the cloister still remains2.

The Latin inscription states erroneously that Wirsung was 43 when he died: in fact, he was 54 since he was born on the 3rd of July 15893.
