In the second half of 19th century the old general hospital in Palais Wildenstein proved to be more and more inadequate and a new Landeskrankenhaus-Universitätsklinikum for the city of Graz was built on the outskirts of the city (Auenbruggerplatz, 1).
The pavilions of the new regional hospital, then the largest hospital in Europe, were inaugurated on May 12, 19121.
