Italian naturalist Lazzaro Spallanzani was born in the little town of Scandiano, in the Province of Reggio Emilia, in 1729. On the facade of his beautiful family home (via Magati, 9) a marble tablet remembers him and his celebrated naturalistic collection: "QUESTA CASA / DOVE LAZZARO SPALLANZANI NACQUE / IL GIORNO XII GENNAIO MDCCXXIX / ACCOLSE DISTRIBUITO IN SEI STANZE / L'INSIGNE MUSEO / CH'EGLI ADUNO' AI PROPRII STUDI / CHIAMANDO / PER CINQUE LUSTRI INSINO AL MILLEOTTOCENTO / VISITATORI DALL'EUROPA". (This house / where Lazzaro Spallanzani was born / the 12th of January of 1729 / accomodated in six rooms / the celebrated museum / he had gathered for his studies / attracting / during 25 years until 1800 / visitors from Europe).
