This monument, a marble high relief to the memory of eminent physician Luigi Sacco, was sculpted by Giovanni Pandiani and was unveiled the 29 April 18581.
Sacco is represented in the act of inoculating a young girl, with a sick cow from which he get the vaccine on the background. Also Sacco's birth home can be seen.
On the top of the marble framework two medals offered to Sacco from the benefited towns of Bologna and Brescia are reproduced.
On the basament, the following italian iscription can be read: "A LUIGI SACCO / MEDICO INSIGNE / PRIMO INOCULATORE DEL VACCINO IN LOMBARDIA / L'ACCADEMIA FISIO-MEDICO-STATISTICA / UNANIME QUESTO MARMO DECRETAVA / E COL CONCORSO DELL'INSUBRE RICONOSCENZA / AL RIPARATORE DI TANTE VITE / NEL MDCCCLVIII PONEVA / —- / NACQUE IN VARESE IL IX MARZO MDCCLXIX MORI' IN MILANO IL XXVI DICEMBRE MDCCCXXXVI".
The monument can be found in the entrance hall to the Historical Archive of the The Ospedale Maggiore, or Ca' Granda (main entrance from Via Francesco Sforza, 28).
