Mariano Semmola graduated in Medicine in 1852. In 1865 he won a chair competition about medical and toxicological subjects, to which he devoted a lot of his time. He consecrated a tireless application on cholera epidemics broke out in Naples in 1884 and 1885. He was a member of the Italian delegation to international conferences on health, and in 1886 he was elected senator.
