Maurizio Ascoli's memorial tablet

This memorial tablet of Maurizio Ascoli can be seen in the department of cardiology of the Ospedale civico "Vittorio Emanuele II" in Catania (Via Plebiscito, 628). The tablet was greatly desired by the doctors of the hospital, for the remarkable work of Maurizio Ascoli as the head physician of the hospital from 1911 to 1929 and the creator of the hypotensive pneumotorax. The tablet is also dedicated to: A. Ferrarotto-Alessi, who financed the first department that was entirely committed to treating tubercolosis; Carlo Forlanini, inventor of the pneumothorax and precursor of Maurizio Ascoli's invention.

The italian inscription, placed in 1973, reads as follows: "IN QUESTA SEZIONE / CHE LA MAGNANIMITA' DI A.FERRAROTTO-ALESSI / DESTINAVA ALLA CURA DEI TUBERCOLOTICI / MAURIZIO ASCOLI / DAL 1911 AL 1929 IDEO' E ATTUO' / IL PNEUMOTORACE IPOTENSIVO / DA QUI LA MIRABILE INNOVAZIONE AL METODO DI FORLANINI / SI DIFFONDEVA NEL MONDO RECANDO UNA NUOVA ARMA / ALLA LOTTA CONTRO LA TUBERCOLOSI / I MEDICI DELL' O.V.E.
