It is a sculpture by Gottfred Eickhoff (1902-1982) and it was unveiled on October 25, 1963. The statue shows Stensen "during his inaugural address on January 29, 1673, (…) in the Domus Anatomica" of Frue Plads1.

Among the promoters of the monument to Stensen there was the Danish physicist and Nobel laureate Niels Bohr2, but unfortunately he died just a few months before the inauguration.
