The building of the old "Escola Médico Cirúrgica” can still be seen in Porto (Rua do Professor Vicente José de Carvalho), in a wing of the Hospital de Santo António.
In 1825, in order to provide medical and surgical training for the future Portuguese physicians, the Régia Escola de Cirurgia was created at the same time in Porto and in Lisbon. In Porto it was located inside the most important Hospital of the city at that time, named Hospital de Santo António. The Hospital still exists and it is working nowadays and it is included in the Historical City Centre of Oporto, considered World Heritage Site by Unesco. The Régia Escola de Cirurgia existed until 1836. It worked very well in the first years, even if it passed though times during the Civil War in Portugal, namely in the years 1832-1833 when Porto was completely surrounded by the troops. In 1836 the Escola Médica-Cirúrgica do Porto replaced the former Régia Escola de Cirurgia. With this denomination, it until 1911. It was located in the Hospital de Santo António, too. Vicente José de Carvalho was one of the leading teachers of the School from 1825 until his death, in 1851. For a time, he was also its Director.
Next to the old entrance door to the School, a memorial tablet gives it a tribute. The Portuguese inscription reads as follows: "NESTA ALA DO HOSPITAL SE INICIOU O ENSINO MÉDICO / OFICIAL NO PORTO, COM A CRIAÇÃO DA RÉGIA ESCOLA / DE CIRURGIA, EM 1825. A ESCOLA MÉDICO-CIRÚRGICA, / QUE LHE SUCEDEU EM 1837, AQUI ESTEVE INSTALADA / ATÉ FINS DE 1883.
