Prospero Alpini's bas-relief and memorial tablet

A few meters away from his house in Marostica, inside the magnificent Santa Maria Assunta Church (via Prospero Alpino), the devotion of the Alpini's family to the Holy Virgin Mary is testified. The famous doctor Prospero Alpini donated to the church this marble bas-relief made by the Sansovino School and representing the Queen with her Child. The epigraph says: “MORTALIS PELAGI SUPERATIS FLUCTIBUS ILLUM DUC NOS IN PORTUM, PAX UBI VERA DATUR VIRGO ENIXA DEUM COELI QUI LAPSUS AB ARCE SANGUINE DELEVIT CRIMINA NOSTRA .SUO. M.D.LXXI. MEN FEB.”

Below the low relief there is the plaque of the family tomb, which says: “PIETAS FAMILIAE ALPINI MAROSTICENSIS FRANCISCI PATRIA PRAECLARISSIMI PROSPERI ISTIUS FILII PHILOSP.AE ET MEDIC.AE DOCTORIS IN GYMNASIO PATAVINO PRUMULGATAE FAMAE ET IOANNIS ANT ARCHIPRESBYTERI HUJUSCE ECCLESIAE EFFIGIEM HUIC PARIETI AFFIXIT PROPE SEPULCRUM.”
