Robert Clayton's monument

This marble monument of Sir Robert Clayton can be seen in the garden of St Thomas' Hospital in London. It is a work of English sculptor and wood carver Grinling Gibbons and it was commissioned in 1701 for the original site of St Thomas' Hospital in Southwark. After the demolition of the old hospital and "a period of obscurity (…) in the dust of a brick-maker's basament, [the statue was] recovered by Mr Whitfield, the apothecary, for the new hospital"1.
