The Roman Baths Area in Guelma is the oldest healthcare facility in the town.
The Roman Baths of Guelma, a site classified in 1998, dates back to the Roman period, in the second century AD, and is located inside the Byzantine castle (the old barracks). Parts of the Roman baths are still visible.
The Roman baths are a building of polished stones of different sizes, supported by stone columns, consisting of different rooms grouped around a large rectangular room (22 meters long and 14 meters wide), accessed via a small staircase. There are four water tanks on the site, to supply the baths. There are also arches of the main doors and chains in the walls, and marble pieces and sculptures were found showing half a statue, a falcon and a three-toothed scepter winged with dolphins.
This site witnessed one of the most horrific massacres on May 8, 1945, committed by the French occupation against unarmed Algerians, where mass executions of peaceful demonstrators took place.
