Severance Hospital and Yonsei Cancer Center

Severance Hospital is the oldest Western style hospital in Korea (50-1 Yonsei-ro, Seodaemun-gu). It was founded in 1885 by Dr. Horace Newton Allen, a Protestant missionary doctor, "and has been serving the national health for the last 130 years as the leading organization among the medical institutions in this country"1. In May 1900, Louis Severance, the American oilman and philanthropist, donated funds for the establishment of a new hospital which was completed in 1904, when the institution was renamed Severance Hospital. In 1969, the Yonsei Cancer Center was added to the hospital and it is, since then, a leadeing research center for the study and treatment of cancer2.
