Stuyvenberg Hospital

The Stuyvenberg Hospital in Antwerp (Lange Beeldekenstraat 267) was built at the end of 19th century when the old Gasthuis St Elisabeth was no more sufficient for the growing population of the city.

The new buildings, an adaptation of the original project of Flemish architect Frans Baeckelmans, were inaugurated in 1884 and their main characteristic is the eight round pavilions for the sick, conceived for facilitating the monitoring of twenty patients by a single nurse1.
