"The Pharmacy at St John's Hospital" by Philippe van Bree

The expressive painting "The Pharmacy at St John's Hospital" by Philippe van Bree can be seen hanging on a door of the Pharmacy of the St John's Hospital in Bruges.

It is a panel (90 x 110 cm) of the first half of 19th century. "The painting illustrates how the pharmacy operated. On the right, we see a sister sorting herbs, referring to Dodoens' famous herbal. Another sister is grinding ingredients in a large bronze mortar. Two more are preparing medicines behind the imposing dispensing table. A mother sits and waits for remedy for her sick son"1.
