Theatrum Anatomicum

A specially dedicated building for the anatomical theatre was only built in the ancient medical school in Montpellier at the beginning of the 19th century. Thanks to the political and economic support of an influential former student, Jean-Antoine Chaptal, the Theatrum Anatomicum was built between 1802 and 1804 by a Parisian architect1. A marble bust of Chaptal can be admired at the base of the double staircase leading to the superior entrance to the theatre, together with three bas-reliefs dedicated to the history of medicine and surgery.
