"In 1870 Marey had enough money to purchase a large house, Villa Maria, in Posillipo, just outside Naples, where he set up a laboratory and began to spend the winters each year”1, meeting friends from all over the world. Among his friends, his colleague Anton Dohrn, the founder and director of Naples' Stazione Zoologica. Inspired by this public aquarium, Marey nurtured his great passion for studying fish and cephalopod locomotion. He tried to capture fishes and birds motion with a chronophotographic gun, marking thus the early histories of cinema and physiology.
