Well of the Madmen

On the staircase of the Museo delle arti sanitarie, inside the old Ospedale degli Incurabili of Naples, there is a well called “of the madmen”, to remember the presence of the mentally ill at the Incurabili until the foundation of the Reale Casa dei Matti of Aversa in the Murat era. The well, which never had a water function, suggests a therapeutic-punitive function connected to the legendary figure of the Master of the madmen Giorgio Cattaneo (Mastro Giorgio).
