William Harvey's coat of arms
The coat of arms of William Harvey can be seen, among many others, on the ground floor of the historical Palazzo del Bo', the central building of the University of Padua. Harvey travelled to Padua in 1599 where he "graduated as a Doctor of Medicine at the age of 24 from the University of Padua on 25 April 1602"1.
In March 1909 during a visit to Padua, William Osler tried to locate William Harvey’s coat of arms among those of the hundreds of former students that decorate the walls and ceilings of the University but he wasn't lucky and noted in his diary: “Could not find Harvey’s stemma – went twice round (bitterly cold & had to give it up)”2.
