William Thomson's portrait
This oil-on-canvas portrait of William Thomson by Thomas Eakins can be seen in the entrance hall to the first floor of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. In 1909 Thomson family donated this magnificient portrait to the College.
This is the second version of an Eakins portrait of Dr. Thomson. The first one, dated 1907, is unfinished and it is in the collection of Mrs. John Randolph Garrett of Roanoke, Virginia. The portrait at the College of Physicians was also painted in 1907, the year of Thomson's death, but no evidence yet uncovered indicates that it was posthumous.
